About Katie
Katie Gillies is a surface and product designer from Nottingham, England. She set up her studio from her parents’ garage back in 2015 and began delivering both personal design projects and commissioned work for clients. Later in 2016, she moved into a studio in Nottingham’s city centre, where she still is today (now with a very pink floor).
Katie is passionate about slow design and her studio is underpinned by this ideology. Slow design focuses on the materials, origin of a piece and how it’s made, taking the environment and sustainability into account. This movement is becoming more mainstream and many small businesses are focusing on these types of practices to not only protect the planet, but to also create more meaningful products.
How she works
Katie specialises in using Jesmonite, which is an acrylic and resin based material, to create her colourful Terrazzo surfaces and products. Every piece is carefully cast by hand and is completely unique in its colour and design. Her Terrazzo works can be used for interior projects and products, ranging from wall panels to homeware goods.
From hosting Terrazzo craft workshops to creating The Kit – an at home DIY Terrazzo kit which includes everything you need to create a bespoke tray or set of coasters – Katie is passionate about creating unique homeware pieces.
Everything Katie produces is handcrafted and she also delivers bespoke Terrazzo surface design projects for private clients. Since setting up her studio Katie has crafted a number of one-of-a-kind pieces including Terrazzo table tops, kitchen counter tops and installations.
Where she works
Based at One Thoresby Street, Nottingham, Katie Gillies’ studio is her day-to-day HQ. However, thanks to her popular Terrazzo casting workshops, you may find her anywhere in the world including London, Manchester, Berlin and Barcelona.
